Assalamu'alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh, dearest..
Let's throwback!
We have been very concern in sharing. One of the events in which EASTmayya took part was Jakarta Creative Week 201 where Amaliah Begum, our founder, spoke in a talkshow entitled “Social Business from The East” on Saturday, May 2, at Fashion Atrium Kota Kasablanka.
EASTmayya is a modest fashion brand focusing on designs and materials from EASTern parts of the world, ranging from South Eastern Asia -- especially Indonesia; its origin country -- the Far East, the South Asia, to the Middle East. One unique aspect of this clothing line is its social business concept.
In various events, we have talked about the story behind EASTmayya which was officially launched on May 15, 2014. The brand’s generousity, fashion, and even the name were all inspired by the late mother of our founder; Ismaya. This is a project of love to keep her late mother’s spirit alive. Even more philosophical, ‘mayya’ itself means ‘princess’ (Indian-Pakistani) and / or ‘love’ (Nepali), referring to South Asian culture.
Providing ready to wear items, design and tailoring service, and eco-friendly products, our brand offers so affordably exclusive packages. Women who have already covered are the main market target. However, any woman who wants to try experimenting with their looks could as well wear our versatile products and services while also finds for a way to be involved in the charity programs.
The long run target on social projects was clearly set from the very beginning: to give back by educating and empowering. We have had primarily engaged in communities for the charity works with BAKTI PANTI I (ORPHANAGE GIVEBACK) program and TUNA DAKSA BERDAYA (EMPOWERMENT FOR THE DISABLED).
Meanwhile, we have worked on projects to make the fashion business becomes more eco-friendly by adopting the spirit to reduce, reuse and upcycle. By collecting scrap fabrics from the production and collaborating with some other parties through DONASI PERCA (SCRAP FABRICS DONATION), EASTmayya facilitated a training for a few disabled ladies to make brooch and tote bags out of those scrap fabrics. In addition, EASTmayya printed price tag and promotional brouchures which could be reused as bookmarks. Our brand also tries to reduce and reuse plastic bags in the operational activities.
In regards of the purpose of Indonesia to become the islamic fashion reference by 2020, in the talkshow, Amaliah spoke that designers from Indonesia shall walk hand-in-hand together with marketers, consumers, media, government and non governmental organizations to be able to represent Indonesia as an ideal role model. Not only that it is a challenging goal, yet it is tricky as we all must continously learn and ensure about islamic values in both design and presentation. We have been very careful in presenting our fashion items. For instance, the team has tried cretive ways to not show models’ faces in lookbook, supported decent make up and accessory, and used chest-covering hijabs.
Trying to sustainably run this baby social entrepreneur, the founder encouraged audience and everyone else to give support by any means. One of EASTmayya’s tagline is #PURCHASINGMEANSDONATING. Thus, buying the products and using EASTmayya’s designing and / or tailoring service are definitely the main ways to help! Else is by being involved in charity projects (become sourceperson, attend the events, build CSR cooperation, et cetera). You could also show that you care by staying in touch online with EASTmayya through our blog and social media.
Please send your best dua always, dearest friends!
